VISIONING STUDY

Historic Environment Scotland

Jura Consultants was commissioned by Historic Environment Scotland (HES) to explore the development potential at Caerlaverock Castle, currently HES’s most popular visitor attraction in its south west Scotland portfolio. The aspiration is to develop Caerlaverock Castle as a headline attraction for Dumfries and Galloway as part of a wider strategic plan to enhance the profile and draw of the region as a visitor destination. Our role was to explore development options for the site and determine a vision for the Castle, establishing a framework for future development. A core aspect of our methodology was a visioning workshop with external stakeholders to explore their aspirations for the site and the role it could play in addressing wider regional development priorities. The event was attended by stakeholders representing a range of interests including local landowners, local council, the natural environment, arts organisations, heritage organisations and local attractions. HES were also involved both participating in the workshop and assisting our study team as facilitators. Encouraging open and creative thinking was fundamental to the workshop’s success. We devised a ranged of interactive group-based activities to inspire and stimulate such discussions. A subsequent workshop was then held with HES staff to discuss the research findings and agree the aspirations and priorities for the site. The results and our recommendations are presented in a Vision Report which will assist HES make strategic decisions regarding Caerlaverock Castle’s development.
